Do you spend long periods of time sitting in a chair? Does your work or home life involve a lot of stress? Perhaps you feel your body tightening, as you are getting older? Then yin yoga could be the perfect yoga for you!

What to expect

Yin yoga is an incredibly relaxing style of yoga suitable for all body types. The yoga postures are predominantly seated poses and can involve props to support your body into relaxation.

Yin yoga focuses on stimulating fascia tissue within your body, instead of stimulating or contracting muscles like other dynamic styles of yoga. By doing so, you are able to moisten and soften the tissue, create more range of motion in your joints, and counteract the tightening of your body’s tissue.

Yin yoga stimulates fascia, opens the joints and does this by holding poses for 3-5 minutes. The idea is that you should be holding these poses in absolute relaxation, and your qualified teachers are here to assist you throughout class with props and supports.

After your yin class, you will leave feeling relaxed and restored!

Getting started

  • All classes are 75 minutes.
  • Please bring a yoga mat and a towel. These items are available for rent/purchase at the studio.
  • Avoid eating a heavy meal 2 hours prior to the class. A light snack is fine, but avoid having a full stomach.
  • The yin classes are UNHEATED.
  • Wearclothing you can comfortably move in. Longer pants and top are ideal for yin yoga.
  • To have the best experience please arrive early. Doors open 30 minutes before classes start and close 2 minutes before the scheduled class time. This is to ensure all classes run on time and to keep the building secure while sessions are running. Latecomers will not be admitted.
  • Please informyour teacher of any injuries or health problems you may have. Having injuries should not stop you from practicing your yoga, however by informing your teachers it will help them to be able to guide you accordingly.
  • Minimum age to participate in the 75 minute yin yoga classes is 12 years old. These children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian during the class. All children under the age of 16 years are required to have their registration form co-signed by a parent or guardian. We reserve the right to refuse admission if these requirements are not met.
  • There is no need to book. If it is your first time please turn up at least 15 minutes before class.
  • It is perfectly fine to practice yin yoga during pregnancy, but please inform your teacher before class so they can better guide and assist you.
  • Yin yoga is NOT appropriate for the first 6 months after having a baby, as your body tissue is still soft and requires a more dynamic style of yoga to help strengthen the body. Bikram yoga is perfect for this.
